PROTECT YOUR PETS DURING THE DOG DAYS OF AUGUST

The auto mechanics at Autotrend Auto Repair in Campbell don’t just care about providing you with the best auto repair experience possible, we also care about keeping your pets safe during the dog days of August! Here are the top tips that will help you keep your furry besties happy, healthy, and safe.
- Keep your pets hydrated with cool fresh water both inside and out.
- If they go outside for even a few minutes, make sure they have some shade to help keep them cool and out of direct sunlight.
- Don’t over-exercise them or you! When it’s really hot, keep them indoors and save the exercise for early morning or early evening after it’s cooled down for the day.
- Watch for signs of heatstroke or overheating such as heavy panting, trouble breathing, high heart rate, increased respiration, drooling, weakness, apathy. The worst ones are collapse, seizures, throwing up, blood in their stools, elevated body temperature of more than 104.
- If one of your sweet pets has a flat face, know that they have an increased chance of overheating. Other contributing factors: age, weight, heart or lung disease, other conditions that leave your pet less hardy. Keep them indoors and cool!
- Never leave your cherished pet in the car. Even in cooler temperatures, you’d be shocked to know just how quickly the temperature inside your vehicle can climb! You should never leave your pet in your car unattended and the California penal code agrees!
- Never leave your pet unattended near a body of water, either! If you do take your furry friend with you out on the water, make sure they have an appropriately fitting flotation device.
- Chlorine is bad for your pet, so make sure to rinse them off after a swim and keep them from liking up too much before the rinse. Never let them drink pool or salt water, or do you best to minimize their intake.
- If you have an upstairs window without a screen, change that! Make sure that the screens you do have are well fitting.
- Even though you’re tempted, don’t shave your long-haired dog. Trim away but when you shave them, you are also removing their coats that are designed for sun and heat protection.
- Never put sunscreen or insect repellent on your pet that is not specifically made for animals.
- Before taking your dog for a run or even a walk, see if you can hold your hand on the asphalt for at least 5 seconds. If you can’t, it’s too hot for their paws. Not only that, but their bodies can heat up quickly.
- Items to keep completely out of reach: rodenticides, insecticides, citronella candles, insect coils and anything else that might be harmful to your sweet furry friends.
- Common foods that are poisonous to your pet: xylitol (can cause seizures and death), grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate, alcohol.
If you think your pet has ingested something toxic, don’t hesitate to call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.
